High-Priority Bonus: Submarine Service
If you qualify as a Submariner (Weapons Engineer or Nuclear Reactor Specialist), you are eligible for a £25,000 bonus after six years of service. This is provided on top of your base salary and your additional annual “Submarine Pay” allowance.

Requirements & Qualifications
- Nationality: British, Irish, or Commonwealth citizen. (Note: Commonwealth applications open the first Friday of every month at 15:00 GMT).
- Ratings: Many roles require no previous qualifications; technical trades may require GCSE English/Maths.
- Officers: Minimum 72 UCAS points and 5 GCSEs (Grade 4/C or above).
- Height Standards: Minimum 145cm (151.5cm for Aviators; 157cm for Submariners).
- Fitness: Pass the Pre-Joining Fitness Test (2.4km run).
Age Limit
- General Entry: 16 to 39 years old (applications can begin at 15 years and 9 months).
- Officer Entry: Generally between 18 and 42 years old.
Application Process
The process has been streamlined, with some candidates moving from offer to entry in 40 days:
- Online Registration: Register your interest at the Royal Navy Careers website.
- Defence Aptitude Assessment (DAA): Online test evaluating reasoning, mechanical, and electrical comprehension.
- The Interview: One-on-one discussion with a recruiter.
- Fitness Test (PJFT): 2.4km run. Target: Men (under 13:20); Women (under 15:48).
- Candidate Preparation Course (CPC): A 4-day residential experience to taste naval life.
