Build the Future in Network Rail 2026
Job Description
At Network Rail, we don’t just move trains; we move the country. We are looking for dedicated individuals to join our 2026 intake across four primary divisions. Whether you are interested in high-tech rail operations, hands-on engineering, or digital infrastructure, your work will ensure millions of passengers reach their destinations safely every day.
Positions Available & Career Paths
1. Operations: The “Brain” of the Railway
Signallers (Grades 2-9): Act as the air traffic controllers of the tracks. You’ll manage train movements from traditional signal boxes or high-tech Rail Operating Centres (ROCs).
Incident Responders: Our “blue light” service. You are the first on the scene to handle everything from technical failures to track obstructions.
2. Maintenance: The “Backbone”
Track Technicians: The frontline of rail safety, responsible for inspecting and repairing rails, sleepers, and ballast.
Off-Track Operatives: Managing the railway corridor, including drainage, vegetation control, and fencing to prevent landslips.
3. Engineering: The “Architects”
Disciplines include Civil (bridges/tunnels), Electrical (overhead lines), and Mechanical. You will be designing and overseeing the massive structural assets of the UK.
4. Project Management & Digital/IT
Scheme Managers: Delivering station upgrades on time and under budget.
Cyber Security & Data Science: Protecting the network from digital threats and using Big Data for predictive maintenance.
Pro Tip for 2026
We are currently prioritizing “Multi-Skilled” technicians. Candidates with a blend of electrical and mechanical experience are highly encouraged to apply to help modernize our maintenance delivery.
